Celebrating 25 years of building strength, stability and self-reliance, we reunite with Habitat homeowners--people who know the joy of having a place to call home.
Today, we share Cecilia and her children Chloret and Kevin’s story. In February they will celebrate 10 years in their home.
“With the grace of God, and the support of my Habitat family—look where I am now. And my children too.”
When they applied to our program, Cecilia, Chloret and Kevin lived in a cramped one-bedroom trailer in Grand Island. While her children had their own beds, for a more than a year Cecilia slept on the floor. She shared, “I always said that first I would give my children what they needed.”
A single mom with two children and a full time job, Cecilia dedicated herself fully to fulfilling her 500 hours of sweat equity. Cecilia completed a series of financial and home education classes to help prepare her family for long term success. Cecilia's eyes shine as she recalls, "For me it wasn't tiring. I was building my own home with my own hands."

Nearly ten years later, Cecilia's dreams has come true. Her daughter Chloret is married with her own child. Her son Kevin is about to graduate from Grand Island Senior High. He will continue his education at UNL with the intention of becoming a doctor.
Cecilia's greatest joy is knowing that with the help of God and her "Habitat family" she was able to make a lasting difference in her life and the lives of her children: "For me that's happiness--to give my children what they desired. And that's what I did."
